Northwest Account Manager, Fruit Procurement & Grower Services – Washington

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The Account Manager, FP & GS is responsible for procuring fruit for products from both packers and growers (members and non-members).  Position builds solid relationships with growers and packers; assist members with deliveries of fruit and market right utilization; and negotiate cash purchases with both warehouses and growers to ensure adequate fruit supply to support marketing initiatives and on-time deliveries.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

This position reports to the Vice President of Fruit Procurement and Grower Services or Raw Fruit Procurement Manager and may supervise staff.  The position works closely with Logistics group, administration and scale house personnel, production, planning, sales, growers, and warehouses.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Manage the inventory and analyze the quality of fruit located at packers to help facilitate the proper movement, timing and use of the product. Visit packers on a frequent basis to recheck fruit attributes and validate accurate shipments. Ensure Food Safety Documentation from packers is complete and current in the company’s systems.
  1. Develop a rapport with decision makers at packhouses, providing outstanding customer service to ensure continued support. Interact with packinghouse’s processor personnel to maintain fruit movement on the system.  Keep them updated on price changes, cash purchasing options, fruit quality issues, changes to specifications, and special needs that require certain parameters be followed to allow for the purchase of fruit (i.e., high quality, organics, etc.).
  1. Meet with growers to assess their fruit for potential orchard run diversions, contracts, or direct purchases.  Make all of the detailed arrangements for this fruit from the actual orchard run write-up, the amount of bins required, transportation to the proper orchard, and tagging of fruit for proper lot information. Ensure growers’ food safety documentation is complete and current in the system. Follow-up with growers to make sure that the fruit is harvested timely, estimated quantities are on track and payments are accurate.
  1. Develop an annual business plan for fruit movement with packers, review the plan monthly with all assigned packers. Ensure two way communication of fruit requirements as well as communicating packers needs back to appropriate personnel.
  1. Provide input and feedback to management relating to grower relations and fruit availability.
  1. Interact with Logistics Department with the movement of fruit and identify any problem fruit for immediate disposition. Follow through to make sure that the packers are entering information correctly into the system for timely pick-ups and scheduling information.
  1. Attend meetings relevant to the company both at the state and local level. Represent the company in a professional and courteous manner.  Attend company meetings to discuss fruit and planning schedules, product mixes and pricing discussions.
  1. Interact with administration, scale house personnel and production personnel on specific orders to validate grades, weights and quality issues. This is a critical step that must be done timely to ensure accurate payment.
  1. Have regular attendance and work appropriate number of hours to get the essential functions completed.

Additional Functions

(Incumbents may not perform all the following functions listed below):

  1. Keep packhouses updated on market right issues for member fruit. Meet with growers to discuss market right issues and help initiate the sale, purchase or lease of market rights to and from other members.  Follow-up with growers to make sure that they received payment for the market rights.  Meet with non-members to explain benefits of membership and initiate the application process for membership.
  1. Provide leadership and supervision of Quality Assurance Inspector. Manage goals and objectives for direct reports.  Provide formal and informal feedback through coaching, monitoring and evaluating job results.
  1. Maintain pesticide compliance by reviewing pesticide documents submitted by growers and packers and entering information into database. Assists with SQF compliance by relaying the requirements and quality concerns with each grower.
  1. Research and compile market data published by USDA for use as a tool in decision making for various crop purchases, production, and sales.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR ENTRY:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • General understanding of the fruit industry, packhouse procedures, and fruit handling practices.
  • Principles and practices of inventory management.
  • Broad knowledge of the agricultural business and the cycles/seasons that affect the market.
  • Principles and practices of supply chain, related to perishable food items.
  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations. 

ABILITY TO:

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with growers and packers.
  • Maintain confidential and sensitive information.
  • Gain cooperation through discussion and persuasion.
  • Effectively resolve conflicts and negotiate.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Identify, research, and analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, and project consequences of proposed actions.

  • Use computers and computer software including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Meet behaviors established in the Company’s performance management and development process.

EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATION/LICENSES, AND TRAINING:

  • A BA/BS degree in agriculture, horticulture, business or related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in procurement, preferably in an agricultural business/environment.
  • Driver’s license from state of residency is required.
  • Must meet the company’s driving insurance requirements.
  • Washington produce buyer’s license is preferred. For California, produce buyer’s license is required.
  • SQF or GAP certification is preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Frequently works in an outdoors, manufacturing/plant, or cold storage environments and occasionally has exposures to an office environment
  • Constantly deals with highly confidential information
  • Occasionally works under tight time constraints or with business activities of a seasonal/cyclical nature
  • Frequently travels, and occasionally includes overnight stays, to other worksites, for off-site meetings, and for training purposes
  • Occasionally works with dissatisfied or angry customers
  • Occasionally works from home
