The application engineer is a key member of the customer-facing team. They work closely with account managers and marketing managers to provide an important technical solution development link between current and potential customers and products and solutions.  The application engineer’s primary focus is to strengthen the sales and conversion process thru opportunity identification, needs assessment, technical consultation and solution development.


  1. Subject Matter Expertise
  • Develop an advanced working knowledge of key targeted applications, technical considerations, market trends and alternative solutions in the context of customer operational and business strategies.
  • Develop and maintain thought leadership on new application developments, technologies and competition.
  • Work closely with cross-functional project teams both inside and outside the company to develop win-win solutions.
  1. Needs Assessment
  • Perform application audits and provide technical guidance and leadership in determining specific needs / issues where
    the company can provide measurable value for the customer.
  • Lead efforts in translating customer/market needs into defined projects and/or technical specifications.
  1. Opportunity Identification
  • Identify opportunities for product and service improvements that will provide value to customers based on market trends and common industry problems, new technologies, regulations, etc.
  • Conduct SWOT and competitive analysis with Market Managers and Sales to target unmet needs in marketplace.
  • Perform analyses of product cost/benefit; identify financial investment and technical justification.
  1. Technical Consultation and Solution Development
  • Lead data gathering, interpretation and education efforts, including utilizing industry standard techniques and developing creative methodologies to collect management decision level data.
  • Develop accurate and actionable business case proposals for both the customer and for the Company.
  • Collaborate with customer and internal stakeholders to identify, develop and commercialize product improvements and potential new products.
  • Develop and maintain a strong understanding of legal, regulatory and certification requirements, particularly food safety, rail certification and material data.
  1. Customer Development
  • Collaborate with internal and external cross-functional teams to develop and deliver compelling value propositions for container conversions and process improvements.
  1. Project Management
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities from a diverse customer base
  • Project management experience in a technical or manufacturing environment


  • Engineering degree and 3 years of experience in processed food, machinery, or packaging manufacturing
  • Customer facing engineering or solutions based experience – preferred


  • Interpersonal savvy – Relates well to all kinds of people, up down and sideways; inside and outside the organization
  • Customer focus – Acts with customer in mind. Establishes and maintains relationships with customers and gains their trust and respect. Dedicated to meeting the expectations and requirements of internal and external customers.
  • Organizational agility – Knowledge of how the organization works. Knows how to get things done through formal and informal channels.
  • Creative problem solving – Looks beyond the obvious and doesn’t stop at the first answers. Uses rigorous logics and methods to solve difficult problems with effective results
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Highly collaborative team player – this position works directly with individuals inside and outside the Company at all levels of the organization
  • Highly motivated, self-directed and detail oriented – demonstrated ability to distill and organize information into actionable proposals and plans
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Able to prioritize and juggle multiple projects and deadlines
  • Financial acumen and working knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Up to 50% travel
