To oversee Crop Workers and help care for the crops for the benefit of the research department or breeders to help in the implementation of the breeding program. Observes aspects of the crops’ development and has the expertise needed to propose improvements.

Brief description of responsibilities and duties:

  1. Evaluate needs and oversee Crop Workers. Determines the priority of the tasks in consultation with the Station Manager. Provides guidance and oversight of Crop Workers while monitoring the quality of work being carried out. Serves as the point of contact for Crop Workers, the Station Manager and the Breeding departments for all aspects involved in tasks concerning the crops.    Leads weekly meetings with the breeding teams to determine week-to-week planning. Monitors and ensures compliance with workplace and chemical safety regulations.
  2. Observing and reporting aspects of the crop’s development. Reporting any observed extraordinary qualities or deviating growth of the crops to the Station Manager.  Remains up-to-date on the latest developments in the field of the cultivation of the specific crop through contacts with crop experts training courses and specialist literature and proposes improvements him/herself on the basis of the acquired knowledge.  Responsible for some aspects of climate control, including the operating of climate computer systems and proposing improvements as it relates to climate control.
  3. Performing (routine) tasks to care for and treat crops. Caring for and treating the crops throughout the entire cultivation cycle, e.g. various (routine) tasks.

4 Spraying the crops where necessary. Follow guidelines set by Breeders when setting up greenhouse and field trials.  Informing the Station Manager or Breeder about symptoms of diseases and deciding how they should be controlled. Monitors the crops during occasional weekend shifts and takes action in the event of emergencies. Stays up to date on all crop cycles for various crops grown at several research facilities. Harvesting the crops during the harvest period.   Skilled at planting using various types of planters and the setting up of cultivators and irrigation systems.

5 Other duties:  Keeps the facilities operating in a safe, clean and neatly organized manner.   Maintains all equipment and facilities in accordance with federal, state and county guidelines. Miscellaneous data collection as it relates to safety, ag waivers and phytosanitary documents. Other duties as assigned.

Job Profile:

Education / Knowledge Bachelor’s degree in agriculture or crop science/crop management.  Minimum of 2-3 years of relevant work experience required. Possesses a current pesticide application license or is able to obtain it within 90 days of hire.  Forklift certification required.

Skills Must be able to operate and calibrate farm equipment; tractors, setup cultivators, irrigation systems and sprayers.  Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint).  Professional, assertive and clear communication skills (verbal and written), including active listening skills. Bilingual – proficient in both the English and Spanish language.

Working Conditions Works under varying climatic conditions in both greenhouses and outdoors. Able to lift harvested product or planting materials up to 75 lbs
