A well-established food manufacturer is searching for a Director of Purchasing to join their team. the Director of Purchasing reports to the VP of Supply Chain and assumes an integral role in efficient and cost-effective negotiation and purchasing of all packaging and perishable materials used in the manufacturing of finished goods across all brands. While ensuring outstanding departmental leadership and staff development, drive departmental efficiencies to meet business objectives. Troubleshoot, identify, implement, and manage process improvement projects throughout the Purchasing arena to maximize effectiveness and improve profitability. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Effectively negotiate Contracts and Pricing for new and existing items and/or projects
  • Collaborate with the New Product Development team to coordinate sourcing to include New Product ingredients and Packaging
  • Analyze product development requests and work with staff to determine appropriate suppliers
  • Effectively ensure solicitation of RFQs to potential suppliers, propose supplier selection and secure secondary sources.
  • Ensure 100% of time quotes and delivery for production material
  • Develop strategies by vendor or commodity to ensure cost efficiency
  • Effectively control purchasing procedure and ensure minimization of cost
  • Manage production scheduling process as it relates to purchasing to ensure schedules are accurate and maintained according to demand forecasts
  • Lead materials – purchasing initiative meetings cross functionally with production management to ensure cohesiveness in scheduling
  • Proactively manage production and purchasing levels to minimize inventory
  • Develop and manage training and performance development plan for team to ensure maximization of talent
  • Prepare, present and manage to departmental budget and lead annual improvements through developed Key Performance Indicators

Skills and Qualifications:

  •  Minimum 10+ years purchasing/supply chain experience in a leadership role
  • Minimum 10+ years manufacturing, food industry or produce preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Operations management knowledge
  • Project management experience
  • Purchasing experience in a manufacturing environment that includes packaging and perishables
  • Proven knowledge of and experience in Production/Inventory Control while working in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience in maintaining minimum inventory management systems philosophy and tools
  • Demonstrated small group leadership and team building skills and the ability to develop a culture of respect and commitment to never-ending improvement
  • Experience with and a thorough understanding of MRP systems
  • Able to train other workers to the requirements and standards of the organization
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team as required in a fast paced work environment
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, team management and interpersonal skills, and the ability to resolve problems on a professional level
  • Able to maintain confidentiality of information
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, organizational, and presentation skills
  • Strong conceptual thinking abilities and ability to make difficult data-driven decisions
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize, react quickly, and handle highly-charged situations
