West Coast Director of Sales – Southern California

A leader in horticulture and greenhouse production has a terrific opportunity for a Director of Sales with a strong background selling to national retail grocery chains and managing a sales department.  This position leads the sales team, takes care of key accounts, and works closely with other departments including operations, warehouse, and others to deliver optimal results for the company and clients.

The company has a consultative, service-oriented sales approach to work hand-in-hand with retail customers.  The position will work closely with retail buying teams and DCs, and be responsible for delivering growth, margins, and customer development.  A background working with retailers is strongly desired.

Position is located in the Santa Barbara / Ventura County region, and reports directly to the President. All members of the sales team (accounts representatives, the sales assistant, logistics/purchasing coordinator, and administrative assistant) report directly to the Director of Sales. This is part of the Senior Management team.  The Director must be able to engage in critical, long-term relationships with major accounts and effectively guide team members to do the same.

To achieve objectives, the Director of Sales is responsible for the following specific tasks:

  • Direct management of major accounts
  • Development of new business
  • Manage, support and cultivate the development and growth of the sales team.
  • Conduct regularly scheduled reviews with the Sales Account Representatives to discuss in-depth account reports, new opportunities customer concerns, industry swings and new product
  • Management of live inventory
  • Plans and executes a pricing strategy
  • Purchasing of decorative containers and finished plants
  • Management and coordination with Public Relations/Marketing vendors
  • Management and attendance of trades shows
  • On-Site visits with major accounts

Further responsibilities include:

  • Participates in company-wide short and long-term improvement efforts
  • Contributes to building a positive team environment
  • Inspires and motivates employees to perform at a high level

Qualifications and experience sought:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent
  • 5+ years’ experience in a sales leadership role
  • The ability to take initiative and be creative, while simultaneously taking direction.
  • Experience in customer relationship management
  • Ability to build effective, results-yielding relationships
  • Exhibit excellent written and oral communications, interpersonal skills, planning,presentation and organizational

Travel: Must be able to travel up to 40 days per year to visit clients and to attend trade shows.
