The Food Safety and Quality Assurance Manager is charged with continuing development and maintenance of a quality system to assure that all products manufactured by the organization meet customer specifications and achieve superior quality and reliability levels. This position is responsible for sanitation and food safety while managing a variety of personnel.
Promotes quality, food safety, and personnel safety throughout the organization.
Oversee the SQF program. This includes posting updates and maintaining training and program review schedules.
Supervise and train QC Technicians including the micro technician.
Supervise and train sanitation personnel.
Provides for ongoing training as required for plant and new personnel in coordination with Human Resources.
Maintains effective QA programs for product inspection and food safety.
Responsible for verification and validation of food safety and quality systems.
Maintains effective sanitation programs and ensure proper application of approved cleaners and sanitizers.
Performs documented internal GMP audits and vendor audits.
Represents the Company during quality audits, regulatory audits, and 3rd party auditors. Will support customer visits as requested by Sr. Management.
Directs sampling and coordinates lab analysis programs.
Troubleshoots and locates sources of micro issues.
Develops and maintains product, supply, and labeling specifications.
Performs and reports on process and formulation tests.
Maintains and supports Standard Operating Procedures.
Maintains organization of QC documents and provides timely access and technical responses to Customers & Sales. Reviews QC inspection records daily.
Maintains, directs and controls inventory hold, recall, & HACCP programs.
Performs customer complaint investigation, response, and reporting.
Provides timely written and verbal quality deviation reports to inform staff and management.
Develops a thorough understanding of existing processing systems and methods.
Observes all safety rules and GMPs.
Development of the Food Safety & QA Department
Assists with the development and administration of programs, procedures, and guidelines to help align the workforce with the strategic goals of the company.
Participates in developing department goals, objectives, and systems.
Participates in administrative staff meetings and attends other meetings and seminars.
Assists to establish departmental measurements that support the accomplishment of the company’s strategic goals.
Assists with the monitoring of an annual budget.
Education & Minimum Requirement
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Food Science, Business, or Organization Development or equivalent. Masters degree preferred.
Five plus years of progressive leadership experience in Quality Assurance / Food Safety positions.
Certification as SQF Practitioner or BRC, formal HACCP training certified.
Specialized training in food safety, food plant sanitation, FSMA, cGMPs, Grower GAP, employee relations, safety, training, and food defense preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
At least 5 years of QA/QC supervisory experience in food processing.
General knowledge of FSMA / SQF laws and practices.
Experience in the administration of benefits and food safety programs and other QA programs.
Builds professional relationships with customers, auditors, & staff & management.
Excellent computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment. Must include Excel and demonstrated skills in database management and record keeping.
Effective oral and written communication.
Excellent interpersonal and coaching skills.
Evidence of the practice of a high level of confidentiality.
Excellent organizational skills.
Travels as required to perform QA duties.
Effective in a fast-paced dynamic work environment.
