West Coast Grower Relations Manager – California

This position is responsible for working with our farmer/grower base on all crop management activities up to the point of harvest. This includes grower relations, crop planning, raw material establishment and crop performance, field safety program, and food safety programs. Provides leadership to field operations staff, while driving a culture of accountability and results through strategy deployment and effective performance management. Works effectively with cross functional areas, including Supply Chain, Plant Operations, and Sales as a key Leader within the management team.

Essential Functions

  • Monitor & enhance crops over all growing areas, making strategic recommendations to growers/farmers and varieties to plant in line with business strategy & goals.
  • Work with growers/farmers to estimate volumes, to assist in forecasting and planning and meet supply volume requirements.
  • Execute crop/field plan based on company forecast, meeting with growers/farmers to improve crop efficiency and work through any problems that affect the outcome of high yield and excellent quality crops.
  • Facilitate new and existing grower relationships to meet supply chain volume requirements. Develops and maintains effective grower/farmer relations, providing leadership in solving issues and educating on best field practices in a proactive way.
  • Perform ongoing grower performance analysis and apply results to business decisions. Identify opportunities for enhanced cost reduction, yield optimization, operational safety, and quality improvements.
  • CCA certified or able to complete this within 12 months.
  • Proactively communicate with growers to facilitate compliance requirements for supplier approval and food safety. Oversees G.A.P. program: recertification and record keeping.
  • Develops planting plan and tracks seed inventories to meet the requirements of the Capacity Plan.
  • Collaborate with various departments (i.e. Supply Chain, Plant Operations) to enhance/improve field operations.
  • Through supervisory leadership, manages staff in field scouting and agronomic activities, to include training, development, and performance management.
  • Ensure adherence to all company standards regarding employee safety, productivity, product quality and food safety practices.
  • Ensure a robust safety culture, including awareness, adherence to programs.

Qualifications – Knowledge, Skills, Experience, Behaviors

  • Bachelor of Science Degree or equivalent experience in Agronomy, Plant Sciences, Horticulture or equivalent is required.
  • Minimum of five years of related experience in commercial crop management and processing.
  • Comprehensive understanding of farming technologies and practices, and agronomy.
  • CCA certified or able to complete this within 12 months.
  • General knowledge of G.A.P., GMP. HACCP, Quality, Food Safety programs
  • Experience/knowledge of IQF processes preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ERP programs.
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to do multiple tasks and solve problems with a sense of urgency with minimal supervision.
  • Needs to be dependable, reliable, self-starter, and able to work independently as well as a member of a team.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proven collaboration, communication and interpersonal skills with internal customers and cross-functional teams.
  • Travel to local and regional fields will be required on a daily basis. During the main season, work schedule is variable, hours are lengthy, and night work is common. Position requires some overnight travel to growing areas and/or for company meetings, for extended periods.
  • California driver’s license and the ability to be covered under company-sponsored vehicle insurance program required.
  • Spanish proficiency preferred.

Working conditions

While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions, wet or humid conditions; occasionally exposed to work near moving mechanical parts, work in high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, vibration.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Physical requirements

While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, talk or hear; and frequently required to sit; occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, taste or smell.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
