The Irrigation Manager reports directly to the Farm Manager and works with the whole Pacific Northwest team and other Managers and corporate teams to effectively manage approximately 1,000 acres of organic vegetables annually.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of this position is to efficiently manage the irrigation operations to ensure excellent customer and vendor satisfaction so the site is able to meet financial goals and objectives by:

Irrigation Responsibilities and Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Maintain all center pivot and drip irrigation systems to ensure proper and timely watering is occurring
  • Assist with planting and harvesting crops
  • Install and maintain remote monitoring/control systems on all pivots
  • Analyze and maintain all sprinkler packages
  • Apply fertilizers and chemicals with pivot injectors
  • Coordinate watering schedules with Farm Manager
  • Maintain contact with Agronomist and Farm Manager to assure proper crop health is maintained throughout the entire crop cycle
  • Provide timely and accurate crop status reports to the Farm Manager
  • Perform pump and pivot maintenance on a prescribed schedule and on an as needed basis during the growing season

Year-long Responsibilities and Duties

  • Maintain contact with outside groups including other farms, irrigation companies and associated industries
  • Provide, in conjunction with the Farm Manager, yearly and long-range planning to meet cost, quality, and service objectives

Experience and Skills:

Required Position Qualifications

  • Demonstrated strong work-ethic
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 10+ years’ experience with irrigation programs including center pivot and drip irrigation
  • Must have extensive experience in the installation and management of drip tape irrigation
  • Previous experience working with vegetable crops, preferably organic
  • Electrical knowledge sufficient to troubleshoot and repair center pivot irrigation and chemigation equipment
  • Previous experience with hydraulic valves and pilot systems for pressure regulation, pressure sustaining, flow control and on/off configurations
  • Demonstrate proficiency in operating electronic devices as they relate to irrigation telemetry control
  • Ability to understand pivot irrigation “Step Programs” to select and run the correct application as required
  • Ability to work extended hours as needed during irrigation season
  • Willingness to assist other farm teams for extended hours as required for planting, harvest and shipping
  • Proficiency in operating heavy equipment such as: boom truck, loader, telehandler, backhoe, dump truck, forklift, excavator, road graders
  • Ability to meet physical requirements of the position with or without accommodation:
    • Work out of doors and in the summer and fall weather constantly
    • Operate a motorized vehicle, keyboard, control panel, telephone/radio and variety of hand tools
    • Walk across uneven surfaces in fields and outdoor work areas continuously (67% to 100%)
    • Climb stairs and ladders occasionally (0%-33%)
    • Work at heights up to 25 feet
    • Frequently (34%-66%) lift and carry 10 lbs.
    • Occasionally (0%-33%) lift and carry up to 75 lbs.
    • Stand for extended periods of time (30 minutes at a time, 8 hours per shift)
    • Occasionally bend, reach, reach above shoulders, squat, kneel for 15 minutes, push or pull up to 50 lbs., twist/rotate arm, wrist and torso, and crawl 20 feet
    • Occasionally perform fine manipulations with hands and fingers
    • Occasionally perform simple grasping and firm grasping
    • See, hear, smell and speak
  • Ability to acquire and hold a valid US driver’s license and successfully pass vehicle insurance verification
  • Candidates must be eligible to work unrestricted in the U.S. without company sponsorship
  • Ability to comprehend, read, write and communicate proficiently in English and interact with all levels of the organization

Preferred Position Qualifications

  • Bachelors of Science degree in an Ag related field
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish
  • 5+ years’ experience managing irrigation programs over a large geographic region as well as ability to travel up to 30% of work time
