Director of Transportation – California

A well-established grower/shipper/packer is looking for a Director of Transportation to join their team. This position will be responsible the development and implementation of strategy as related to carrier administration, freight payment, and analytics functions for Transportation. The role is expected to drive value by using data to determine operational efficiencies that will improve service to customers while generating cost savings ideas. The Director will interface with operations and supply chain leads, carriers, and vendors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Manage the day to day Domestic freight bookings, which includes:
Oversee decisions on what carriers are being used and negotiate rates.
Provide rates to sales group for quotes.
Mix LTL orders together to efficiently ship orders at lowest cost.
Create contracts and laying out the details.
Monitor carrier performance to ensure accuracy.
Troubleshoot issues as they arise.
Responsible for managing and mentoring Transportation employees across multiple locations.
Continually find ways to grow the Transportation department’s ability to generate revenue.
Manage the day to day Export freight bookings, which includes:
Work with Transportation employees on arranging inland freight to the port.
Ensure Pier Pass and Port Check processes are being followed.
Monitor carrier performance.
Work with Export Sales team on negotiating rates.
Provide Executive Team with weekly Domestic and Export KPI’s.
Develop and manage the budget for the Transportation department.
Partner with Customer Service team for the reconciliation of claims.
Provide Accounting with monthly accrual numbers and additional KPI information.
Source and oversee new carrier set up.
Actively manage third party logistic partners and processes.
Monitor the progress of the trains and trucks in and out of the facilities.
Ensure all needed system transactions are taking place to ensure accuracy.
Manage inventory by first in, first out.
Review all billings for accuracy.
Troubleshoot and resolve issues as they arise
Skills and Qualifications:
BA/BS or equivalent with an emphasis in Business, Management, Transportation/Logistics Management, or equivalent course of study is preferred.
Minimum of 10 years of experience in Transportation.
Minimum of 5 years experience managing direct and indirect employees.
Strong people skills, collaboration skills, and the ability to work with people across many different functions.
Knowledge and experience with all modes of transport and carriers.
Superior computer skills, particularly Excel, reading and creating reports and conducting analysis for business decisions.
Demonstrates strategic thinking and change management skills.
Will work closely with the Sales team to understand their customer needs at the current time as well as what is anticipated for the future.
