Organic Vegetable Production and Harvesting Manager – California

The Organic Vegetable Production and Harvesting Manager oversees all aspects of organic growing and harvesting departments in row crop and produce box farming operation. This person will specifically focus on the irrigation, fertilization, cultivation, and applying of pesticides to all organic row crops. This person must be hands on and walk all organic fields daily. This person will help determine the plant schedule and harvesting schedule in the field. This person must have extensive hands-on farming experience and must be able to give practical application where needed. This person must also be able to determine the most efficient way to conduct and execute each job application related to row crop farming.
This person will have direct oversight over the irrigation foremen and any other persons associated with the growing of organic row crops. This person will also have direct oversight over all organic harvest crew foremen. This person has daily contact with foremen related to organic production. This person must be hands on and stay in touch at the ground level with all aspects of organic row crop division. This person will not just supervise but be physically working and engaged at the field level as the organic program grows.
Determines organic irrigation, cultivation, fertilizer, pesticide, and harvesting schedules for all organic crops
Has extensive knowledge of organic pesticide/irrigation/fertilization implementation
Works with and establishes planting and harvesting schedules
Walks organic fields to determine quality and quantity of the produce and relays this information to the sales office
Ensure foremen enforce company specs at the field level. Size, weight, count etc.
Ensure foremen give accurate harvest estimates – walk fields and help determine harvesting dates and yields.
Oversees all harvesting for the Farm Box and the organic program.
Work with the sales team reviewing harvest numbers, etc.
Helps determine weeding schedule
Determines proper crew sizes for optimum efficiency
Helps oversee purchasing at the farm and reviews bills related to row crops
Make staffing recommendations to the owners, including hiring, pay and disciplinary actions for those under his/her supervision
Helps establish and maintain contractual agreements between the company and other entities
Provide leadership and direction for the employees and lead by example

Key Skill Sets/Experience/Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in an Agriculture-related field of study such as Crop Science, Agronomy, Ag-Business, etc. or extensive ‘on the job’ experience.
Extensive farming experience, 5 years or more
Willing to be hands on and get dirty, not manage from the pickup
Strong agronomic background
Fluent in Spanish
Mechanical aptitude with general understanding of tractors, pumps and irrigation systems
Ability to identify potential problems, make decisions and recommend viable solutions
Assertive personality, able to make tough decisions regarding efficiency on the farm
Stay current and compliant with rules and regulations affecting the farming industry
Be able to establish a vision and create action steps to see the vision into reality
