One of the leading grower/shipper/packers in the industry seeks an expert in crop production, crop protection, and horticultural practices in the Southeast to work with growers to ensure product is top notch.  This key role will work oversee crop advisors; work with production, research, and other management teams; conduct research; travel to farms in Georgia, Florida, and North Carolina; and work with trade associations.  Position is based in Georgia.

Position Purpose:

This position provides support the company horticultural research and communication objectives by delivering grower support services, conducting in-house research, and enhancing the adoption of best management practices for maximizing member crop quality, productivity, and returns.

ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Grower Services

  • Conducts pest and crop monitoring in Southeast production area
  • Evaluates crop production and pest monitoring service needs of Southeast members
  • Assists in the development of member horticultural services which enhance member productivity and efficiency and membership value
  • Hire, train, and develop crop advisors
  • Manage all aspects of crop and pest monitoring supply procurement and inventory
  • Determine the applicability of new technologies to solve member production problems
  • Assist members in evaluating crop for size and timing. Communicate findings back to operations team
  • Involvement with Florida and Georgia trade associations.

Communication:

  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with producer-owners, horticultural service providers, and industry representatives
  • Manages and updates member acreage in the Southeast, varieties, age of plants, pesticide applications, and mapping in the database
  • Leads the development and management of a multidisciplinary horticultural research and educational outreach program
  • Maintain frequent communication schedule with members via e-newsletters, email, telephone, and farm visits
  • Provide daily updates on crop size and timing (during season) on company’s daily conference call

Research and Development:

  • Conducts member needs assessments and recommends researchable topics
  • Assists in origination, planning, execution, and evaluation of company in-house and grant funded research projects
  • Conducts applied research in areas such as pest management, nutrition, plant physiology, and variety evaluation
  • Attend seminars, workshops, conferences, and field days for continuing education

Organizational:

  • Monitors crop conditions and provides reports of crop volume, timing, and quality
  • Organize and lead annual farm tour and annual horticulture update
  • Assists division VP in development of production reports, pesticide regulatory issues, and research project coordination and analysis
  • Prepares annual and monthly department budgets

Quantitative Data/Job Dimensions:

  • Direct responsibility for crop/pest management and labor budget
  • Provides indirect support to division VP for management of research budget
  • Provides work direction for and evaluation of crop advisors

 QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Masters’ degree preferred or Bachelors’ degree in horticulture, IPM Systems, or other related agricultural disciplines required
  • Documented experience in production agriculture such as crop scouting, pest management and fertility management. Experience in berry production is preferred
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a commercial pesticide applicator license
  • Proven ability to interact with crop producers, industry representatives, and co-workers
  • Must possess valid driver’s license with clean driving record
  • Ability and willingness to travel within all affiliated production areas
  • Competency using a computer to prepare reports and presentations (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) with a willingness to learn additional skills
  • Excellent observational and recordkeeping skills
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills are essential
  • Ability to function as a team player and to work in a professional and confidential manner
